Sunlit Shallows

The harbor’s own water: clear turquoise over white sand, with the sun glinting on the surface, soft surf and gulls overhead. Its islands are Lighthouse Cove, Driftwood Shallows and Turtle Sandbar, all sandbars, bleached driftwood and dune grass, and near Driftwood Shallows two giant driftwood trunks cross to make an arch you can sail through. Sea turtles come up to breathe, gulls wheel and dive, and now and then the Sardine Run passes through. Expect small, easy fish such as gobies, minnows, copperfin and seahorses, with the Spiked-Shell Turtle and Thornback Skate as its rarest and the Sandskipper, a flatfish that hides in the sand, as its signature fish.
