Low, wide and slate-blue, this skate is armoured with hooked bone thorns down its back and tail. Every thorn tip and the seam along its spine burn sea-glass cyan, and pale moon spots glow softly across its wings, so it looks like a string of lights gliding over the sand. It is one of the rarest fish in the Sunlit Shallows, marked by surface boils, and once hooked it heads for deep water.

How to catch it
Section titled “How to catch it”- Look for ripples on the water: they mark a hotspot where Thornback Skate and its kind bite more often.
- It bites more in rain.
- It bites only inside an island’s ring, never out in the open sea.
- When it fights back it mostly dives. Slow your reeling down without stopping, then reel it in while it rests.
