Banks of dark thunderheads with silver-lined tops roll across the slate hide of this massive grouper, and faint lightning veins fork through every fin. A huge bulldog underbite and grumpy, hooded storm-blue eyes give the Thunderhead Grouper the look of a fish that is always in a bad mood. It belongs to the Thunder Straits, where lightning striking one spot on the water marks its hotspots, and it bites far more often in a storm. Hooked, it sulks downward with a heavy, stubborn pull.

How to catch it
Section titled “How to catch it”- Look for crackling lightning: they mark a hotspot where Thunderhead Grouper and its kind bite more often.
- It bites more in storms.
- When it fights back it mostly dives. Slow your reeling down without stopping, then reel it in while it rests.
