A towering, spiky sail of a dorsal fin, banded cream and red, rises over this deep crimson snapper. It has a steep forehead, a strong jutting jaw with snapper fangs, gold-rimmed scales, a dark war-stripe through the eye and a crisp forked tail. Watch for diving seabirds over the Kelpwood, and expect it to surge away hard once it feels the hook.
